I got it from my momma

When I see babies and toddlers
on the subway
on the street in strollers
in supermarkets
at the park

I can't help but marvel at
those tiny toes
those wide eyes
rimmed with long lashes
toothy toothless grins
flashing pink tongues
learning to go pffbbttt, is in art form
their sure wobbly steps
their quick grasping fingers

It is hard for me not to stare
not to smile
not to make silly faces
not to wonder about their mothers and fathers
what will they teach you
what will they preach you
how old will you be when you start to resent the
love and care they will give to you
will they give it to you as you deserve

or will it just be words
given to the babysitter?
